Diablo IV Season 1 Preparation Guide

Diablo IV Season 1 is here! Start off on the right foot with our guide.

With the release of Diablo IV season 1: Season of the Malignant, fans have an exciting gaming experience to look forward to. This new season will feature exciting new challenges, a new campaign, seven new legendary aspects, unique items, cosmetics, and exclusive rewards for players to earn. We’ll be discussing some of what you can expect this season, tips to optimize your gameplay, and how to earn special rewards.

Tips to prepare for Diablo IV Season 1

The season will last for about eleven weeks, ending on October 9th, during which players must complete various objectives to earn rewards. To participate in the season, players must create a brand new character, as existing characters in the Eternal Realm cannot be used. Your new character for Diablo IV season 1 content will need to be created on the Seasonal Realm. However, your new character can benefit from some of the progress you’ve made on your most-progressed Eternal Realm character.

In order for your Seasonal Realm character to benefit from the progress you’ve made on your other character in the Eternal Realm, it is necessary to log in to your main Eternal Realm character at least once in the period between July 18th and when you create your Seasonal Realm character.

Diablo IV season 1 - realm selection during character creation

Transferring progress from your Eternal Realm character to your Seasonal Realm character will help optimize your gameplay. You can even progress a little farther in the Eternal Realm for additional gains. Next, we’ll discuss some of the progression you might want to accomplish to transfer over to your Seasonal Realm character.

Unlock your horse

If you haven’t already, unlock your horse through a side quest you get through the main campaign on your Eternal Realm character. Once you unlock it on one character, you’ll be able to use it on any character, including your Seasonal Realm character. Having a horse from the start on your Seasonal Realm character will give you a huge advantage.

You’ll need to complete the campaign once to access the seasonal content anyway, so you may as well pick up your horse along the way. Once you complete the campaign, you can encounter Malignant enemies in the open world even in the Eternal Realm, but you’ll only have full access to the seasonal mechanics and rewards in the Seasonal Realm.

Explore your map

You can also give your Seasonal Realm character a head start by exploring more of the map on your Eternal Realm character. Map progress can be carried over to your Seasonal Realm character, which will boost your renown and make it easier to navigate. If you really want to go all in, you can clear the entire map with your Eternal Realm character before making your Seasonal Realm character.

Find Altars of Lilith

In addition, unlocked Altars of Lilith and the renown you get from finding them can also carry over to your Seasonal Realm character from your Eternal Realm character. You might want to look up a guide to help you find all the altars if you’re going for full completion, as there are a lot to hunt for.

Note: Softcore and hardcore modes do not overlap in these kinds of shared progression mentioned above. For example, if your main Eternal Realm character was made in hardcore, and you are planning on playing softcore for Diablo IV season 1, you will not be able to carry over this shared map progression or your collected Altars of Lilith.

Diablo IV Season 1 Features

Diablo IV season 1 - Season of the Malignant features. New questline and boss, 32 Malignant Powers, new Season Journey, 7 new Legendary Aspects plus 6 new unique items, and new cosmetics.

Malignant Hearts

Season 1 brings a host of new features to Diablo IV, including exclusive rewards. Seasons also come with a story that is unique to that season, and season 1’s theme is Malignant infection.

One of the biggest changes from the base game is the addition of the Malignant Hearts system, which empowers players with powerful abilities and augmentations. These Malignant Hearts will be season exclusive items that can be socketed into specific slots on your gear pieces.

Players can acquire these Malignant Hearts by completing specific challenges throughout the season. Malignant Hearts can be obtained during Diablo IV season 1 by killing Malignant monsters and capturing their hearts, or by conquering Malignant Tunnel dungeons.

When completing a Malignant Tunnel, be sure to bring a crafted Malignant Invoker with you. Use it on the overgrowth at the end of the tunnel to summon an elite Malignant enemy. You can craft invokers that correspond to the specific colors of the different hearts to increase your chances of getting what you want.

Types of Malignant Hearts:

  • Vicious Hearts, for orange sockets, which give offensive ability increases.
  • Brutal Hearts, for blue sockets, which give defensive power-ups.
  • Devious Hearts, for pink sockets, which give utility buffs.
  • Wrathful Hearts, which can be placed in any socket color.

You can salvage the Malignant Hearts you don’t want at Cormond’s Workbench for Ichor that is used to craft new hearts or Malignant Invokers.

Challenges and Rewards in Diablo IV Season 1

To make the most of season 1, players must complete various challenges in the Season Journey. Some of the challenges include completing dungeons, slaying specific monsters, completing quests, and more. By completing objectives, players will earn unique rewards such as reward caches, Legendary Aspects, and Battle Pass Favor.

Players can expect to face tough monsters and difficult dungeon bosses. To overcome these challenges, players must upgrade their gear with Malignant Heart powers and utilize their character’s unique abilities to maximize their potential. It’s also helpful to work in teams with other players.

Battle Pass

Diablo IV season 1 - Battle Pass

The Diablo IV season 1 Battle Pass is also live as of the start of the season. You can access it in the menu under the “Season” tab. There will be 27 free tiers, featuring cosmetics, titles, and Smoldering Ashes that can be used for various character boosts. If you purchase the premium Battle Pass, you’ll have access to 90 tiers of cosmetics, titles, emotes, and premium currency to unlock.

The Ultimate Edition of Diablo IV comes with an accelerated path to unlock the seasonal Battle Pass, by skipping 20 tiers, as well as activation of the premium Battle Pass, and you can still upgrade to it if you purchased a different edition. Exoprimal is a new Capcom game. It’s an action shooter featuring futuristic suits (Exosuits) as part of your arsenal, and hordes of dinosaurs as enemies. This title just released on July 13th and is available on Steam or through Xbox Gamepass.

Check out the official launch trailer for Exoprimal

Minimum Exoprimal PC Requirements

CPU (Central Processing Unit)Intel i5-7500 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200
GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB VRAM) / AMD Radeon RX 560 (4GB VRAM)
RAM (System Memory)8 GB
Storage50 GB available space to install
Operating SystemWindows 10 Version 20H2 (64 bit)
Minimum Exoprimal PC requirements available on Steam store page.

The minimum Exoprimal PC requirements are luckily not that intense, and it won’t take the most expensive PC out there just to play this game. Many budget PCs and some older PCs should make the cut. This game requires at least Windows 10 to run.

Additional notes under the minimum Exoprimal PC requirements on the Steam store page give a performance estimate for these specs of 30 FPS at 1080p resolution with minimum graphics settings chosen, with possibility of some drops during graphics-intense scenes.

Minimum PC Requirements – Editor’s Pick

This budget Chronos mini configuration meets the minimum Exoprimal PC requirements as listed on the game’s Steam store page, and even exceeds them in some areas.

We think this PC can offer an experience comparable or a bit better than what is described in the Steam store page: about 30 FPS most of the time at 1080p and minimum graphics settings, with some dips in graphics-intensive moments.
Minimum Exoprimal PC requirements recommendation - Chronos Mini configuration

Recommended Exoprimal PC Requirements

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)NVIDIA GTX 1070 / AMD Radeon RX 590
RAM (System Memory)16 GB
Storage50 GB available space to install
Operating SystemWindows 10 Version 20H2 (64 bit) / Windows 11
Recommended Exoprimal PC requirements available on Steam store page.

The recommended Exoprimal PC requirements, which you’ll ideally want to meet or exceed if possible for a better gaming experience than just over the minimum requirements will get you, are a bit harder to meet, but still not the most taxing of recent games out there. Plenty of budget-level PCs will likely be able to keep up and deliver decent performance.

The additional notes on the Steam store page explain that you can probably expect to see around 60 FPS in 1080p resolution at medium graphics settings, with possibility of some drops during graphics-intense scenes with these specs.

Recommended PC Requirements – Editor’s Pick

This version of our Azure model meets the recommended Exoprimal PC requirements from the game’s Steam store page.

This PC should be capable of delivering an experience similar to what is described on the Steam store page for the recommended PC specs: about 60 FPS in 1080p using medium graphics settings, with some dips in graphics-intensive moments.
Recommended Exoprimal PC requirements recommendation - Azure PC model version

For an even better experience than specifications just over the recommended Exoprimal PC requirements is estimated to get you, check out our more powerful model versions in the prebuilt PC section of our website, or configure a custom PC that exceeds the recommended requirements.

In order to climb the ranks, players must battle others and win in order to earn enough points. There are different ranks, but Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond are divided into three tiers. Regulars and the upper tiers with the title “Super” and “Ultra” before them. The “currency” that determines a player’s positioning is League Points.

A Diablo IV Guide for Beginners: Start your Quest to Defend Sanctuary on the Right Foot

New to the Diablo series, or back from a long break? Our Diablo IV guide can help you learn the basics.

The Diablo series finally has another full installment with Activision-Blizzard’s latest release in the series, Diablo IV. If you’re returning after a long break, or just getting into the series, there might be a lot you’re unfamiliar with. Diablo IV also brings some exciting new elements to the series like a more varied and branching skill tree system, as well as the ability to actually customize what your character looks like. Our Diablo IV guide can help you get familiar with fighting your way through Sanctuary.

Choosing your Class

Diablo IV guide - Character selection screen

There five different classes, and each class is further customizable by spending points in your skill trees. In this Diablo game, you’ll even get to customize how they look!

Diablo IV - Barbarian
Barbarian
The Barbarian is a brawler, as well as a master of weapons and war-cries
Diablo IV guide - Druid
Druid
The Druid is a flexible class that can be built towards a few different playstyles. They can cast earth, wind, and storm magic, as well as shapeshift into a sturdy werebear or ferocious werewolf.
Diablo IV - Necromancer
Necromancer
The Necromancer is a summoner class that conjures undead allies to aid them.
Diablo IV - Rogue
Rogue
The Rogue is also flexible in their ability to specialize in either ranged or close quarters combat. They are agile and can utilize poisons or shadow magic as well.
Diablo IV - Sorcerer
Sorcerer
The Sorcerer commands the basic elements to cast powerful spells of ice, lightning, or fire.

Class Skill Trees

The cost to experimenting with skill builds is not that high–you can refund if you have regrets. Refunding skills is even free for the first 8 levels. After that, it will cost you some currency, but not so much it’s regularly a barrier to augmenting your build.

You can choose different skills in a few categories: basic, core, defensive, companion, wrath, and ultimate. There are also subtle ways to augment your chosen skills.

We recommend gathering skills from different categories as soon as you can rather than spending all your points upgrading one skill, so you have access to more moves in battle faster. Then you can focus on upgrading your favorites.
diablo IV guide - skill tree example

Managing your Gear

  • Keep your gear current. Especially early on, newer gear will quickly outpace older gear.
  • Only upgrade legendaries or rares. Anything lower in rarity typically has less potential.
  • Balance selling and salvaging for the gear you’re not using or keeping. You’ll need the resources from both.
  • Gear condition degrades when you die, so be careful!

Upgrading your Gear with Gems

diablo IV guide - gem merchantThe gem system is unlocked after you hit level 20 on a character and complete the priority quest to unlock Kratia the gem merchant in Kyovashad.

Get familiar with the gem system, and don’t worry about being unable to recover a valueable gem from a socket. You can pay Kratia some gold to remove a gem from a socket, and if you salvage a piece of gear, the gems that were in it will appear back in your inventory.

Stash your extra gems, as you’ll be able to combine them for more powerful ones.

General Survival Tips

  • Remember your potion upgrades. The ability of your potions to support you will be much greater if you keep them upgraded as you level.
  • Get out of the area of effect (AOE) damage abilities. It does, often, matter. It may be hard to get used to for some folks, but trust us when we say it is worth it in this game to work on your situational awareness and positioning to keep yourself out of some heavy AOE damage abilities enemies and especially bosses will throw at you.
  • Try bumping up the world tier once you’re already having an easy time. When you get the hang of it, you’ll eventually be ready to enjoy a more challenging level of gameplay!
