Cleaning and Dust Prevention

Dust can be a formidable adversary for any electronic gadget, including your gaming PC. Over time, dust can pile up within your computer, obstructing fans and heat sinks, leading to overheating problems. Here’s how you can clean your PC clean so it’s functioning efficiently:

Regular Cleaning

  • Aim to clean your PC every few months, especially if you live in a dusty area, or once a month if you have furry pets who shed. Regular cleaning maintains airflow and prevents overheating.
  • Use compressed air to blow out dust from components like the CPU cooler, GPU, power supply, and case fans. You can also use a specialized device like a Datavac ESD Safe Electric Duster designed for cleaning electronics to blow dust out.
  • To prevent fans from spinning while cleaning, hold them in place with your finger or a non-conductive tool. Holding a fan in place prevents it from spinning faster than it is meant to, which could damage it, and prevents it from generating electricity that can feed back into your motherboard where it isn’t supposed to.
  • Always clean your PC outside or in a well-ventilated area to avoid redistributing dust in your home.
  • Consider wearing a mask over your mouth and nose while cleaning to avoid inhaling dust, especially if you have respiratory issues.

Additional Cleaning Tools

  • Consider using soft-bristle or anti-static brushes to reach tricky spots and crevices.
  • Microfiber or lint-free cloths are excellent for wiping down surfaces.

Proper Airflow

Ensure that your PC case has good airflow to dissipate heat effectively. Proper airflow helps keep your components running at their optimal temperatures and reduces the risk of overheating. Follow these tips to maintain good airflow:

Fan Placement

  • Keep all the internal fans unblocked and free from obstruction
  • Ensure that the air flows freely throughout the case, with cool air entering from the front and bottom of the chassis while allowing hot air to exit from the rear and/or top of the case.

Cable Management
  • Neatly organize your cables to improve ventilation.
  • Use cable/zip ties or Velcro straps to bundle and route cables away from fans and components.
  • Well-organized cables make future upgrades and maintenance tasks easier.
Filters

Some PC cases come with dust filters on the intake fans. If yours does, make sure to clean these filters regularly to reduce dust entering the system. Dust filters help prevent dust from settling on components.

Cleaning Filters

Remove dust filters from the case and clean them using compressed air or by rinsing them with water and allowing them to dry completely before reinstalling. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your chassis for specific cleaning instructions.

Replacement Filters

If filters are damaged or worn out, consider replacing them. Many manufacturers offer replacement filters designed for their cases, or if your PC is from Skytech Gaming, you can even ask Skytech Gaming support.
