According to Tom’s Hardware, DDR3 and DDR4 prices declined significantly in 2022, and by the end of 2022 you could find DDR5 modules slightly cheaper than at the beginning of the year. DDR4 vs DDR5: What’s the Difference?

DDR4 (double data rate 4) is the most widely used RAM for computers today, and manufacturers have had a lot of time to optimize the technology over the last few years. Its biggest advantage is its affordability and availability; you can get a decent amount of memory from many different brands for a relatively low price. However, its speed can be limiting; it typically operates from 2133MHz to 3200MHz, which isn’t very fast compared to the newer DDR5 technology.

DDR5 (double data rate 5) was released in 2020 as an upgrade to DDR4. It offers much faster speeds than its predecessor — starting at 4800Mhz and stretching beyond! — meaning that it can process more data quickly and efficiently than ever before. Additionally, it has higher bandwidth capabilities and improved power efficiency, making it ideal for gaming PCs that require high-performance levels without draining too much energy from the system.

Which RAM Should I Choose?

If you’re looking to build an ultimate gaming PC with top-of-the-line performance levels then DDR5 is the best RAM for PC gaming– but only if your budget allows! Arguably, DDR4’s best advantage is its compatibility with a wide range of processor and motherboard combinations. DDR5, on the other hand, might require updating your motherboard’s BIOS and tweaking some of those settings, adding some installation time.

If you’re on a tighter budget then sticking with DDR4 might still give you decent results depending on what type of games you play and what settings you run – so weigh up your options before deciding what to buy! And while DDR4 may be cheaper upfront, its slower speed won’t keep up with more demanding games over time – so if you want a truly optimized experience then investing in the newer technology would be worth it in the long run.
